My grandmother recently found this medal among some of her possessions and believes it could have belonged to my great grandfather.
Does anyone know what it may have been given for?
The bottom stamp on the reverse of the medal says "LP&A"

While I don't know what it's for (and indeed, it appears blank), the marks are as follows:
-LP & A is the mark for silversmiths Lloyd, Paine, & Amiel
-Anchor indicates the city of Birmingham, in the UK (where LP&A was located)
-Lion is a Sterling mark (.925 silver)
-That particular form of letter r indicates the year 1916 (which fits with when LP&A was active)
