What was the trajectory of mending the relationship between the United States and Britain following the Revolutionary War?

Today, the U.S. and Britain seem to be the closest of allies, but I imagine there was a lot of resentment after the Revolutionary War. How did we begin to mend the damage done? How did we eventually come to be such close allies?
