In All Quiet on the Western Front, the Kaiser visits the front to do inspections of the troops. Was it common for heads of state to visit the trenches?

There were infrequent visits, the issue of course being that heads of state had other things to do besides appear in the capacity of commanded-in-chief. George V, Tsar Nicholas, Kaiser Karl, Clemenceau, all made visits to the frontlines.
