The north wasn't an unknown land, it was just forested region where the Siberian tribes lived. One of Genghis Khan's earlier 'conquests' actually imposed a tributary relationship on a tribe to the north of modern Mongolia, but most conquests by Turks and Mongols focused on the wealthy urbanized societies of the south.
