I don't know about 1943 - I myself study the World War II homefront and it's pretty insane how often cultural histories stop before and/or start after the world war, but perhaps in the footnotes of these two books about postwar race relations in Detroit you could find some good sources that include the wartime era:

• Thomas J Sugrue, The Origins of the Urban Crisis : Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit (Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1996)
• Suzanne E Smith, Dancing in the Street: Motown and the Cultural Politics of Detroit (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1999).

EDIT: To be perfectly clear, for an undergraduate assignment, I would recommend not looking at a race riot during World War II, simply because the secondary literature is so scanty. This is a topic that deserves more serious scholarly research (so in that sense, well-picked!) but may be beyond the scope of an undergrad assignment because of that.

Find out which libraries in your area have microfilm newspaper archives. Those will be the easiest primary sources to access.
