In a book I'm reading about Kurdish people the author goes and says "Kurdistan had a reputation similar to Scotland as an acknowledged source of good officers and troops."
It goes and gives Saladin as a good example. I was wondering is the author talking about Scotland as in a source for troops and officers for England and what examples do you know of those people.
My best guess is that he means a source of troops and officers for Britain ('England'). The Scottish units of the British Army, especially the Highland Regiments, have a proud history spanning colonial conflicts throughout history, modern day British military operations, and both World Wars.
