Why isn't New York State New Yorkshire?

When the English named New York State and renamed New Amsterdam, why did they name the whole territory New York rather than New Yorkshire, wouldn't that make more sense in British naming conventions?

Shire is the anglo-saxon word for county. So it would not make sense to append shire to a colony's name.

New Hampshire is the odd one out. I wonder why.
