What lead you to believe the Rus were matriarchal?

Your misconception could be that Russia is usually referred to as the 'Motherland', while Germany (and others) are usually referred to as the 'Fatherland'. If that's the case, the reason is that is the word for country in Russian is Feminine, while the world for country in German is Masculine.
