Could someone elaborate a bit on this. How relevant were these extra supplies? Was the Red Cross the only source of outside aid? ect...

I'm just rereading the book, and he specifically mentions it was this particular group of British officer POWs who got 500 tonnes of Red Cross supplies instead of 50 due to a clerical error, which allowed them to stockpile it and get chummy with the German camp guards.
