This is a bit of a tough question to answer. Mussolini was hoping that Italian intervention on the Nationalist side would reduce British influence in the Mediterranean, and he only got a portion of what he wanted. Hitler and Mussolini both wanted France to be worried about its southern border, and while Franco's Spain was not seen as friendly it also did not siphon off a great number of French troops. Also, Spain did not join the war, despite requests from Hitler to do so. Germany did get a good deal of exports from Spain, though. They also got the Blue Division, a group of volunteers from Spain who fought on the Eastern front for a while. Britain and France generally desired to avoid an outbreak of war in Europe, and their governments mostly achieved this goal via the policy of non-intervention.
