It depends on which part of America you're talking about. When the Spanish first arrived in the Caribbean, and South America, they frequently traded with the Native Americans. There were a number of different resources being traded and this led to colonization. Unfortunately, tension grew with the discovery of more precious resources and that is when fighting broke out. From then on, Native American numbers began to diminish.
