I've heard that the Shroud of Turin played a role in cementing the image of Jesus as a bearded man with long hair. Is there any truth to this?

Does the modern, "hippie" appearance of Jesus predate the popularity of the shroud?

I'm sure an art historian will pull up all the relevant backup..but as I understand it, the modern western image is based upon the Christ Pantocrator which is Byzantine...the earliest works are dated in sixth or seventh century and the image is still used quite a bit in the eastern church. So we are several hundred years earlier than the shroud of Turin.
