Brooklyn was the original name for the area, named by the Dutch. Breukelen was named for a province in the Netherlands. Queens was named by the English, so it was the original name.

So in summary, Brooklyn was the original name given by the Dutch so it stuck, and Queens was the original name given by the English, so it stuck.

Also, Brooklyn is also known as Kings County. So it is known as Kings in a way. So the British renamed the area now known as Brooklyn as Kings County, but Brooklyn stuck since it was the original.
