I'm guessing you're referring to the Western Front; all fighting was to end on the Western front, on both sides, at the 11th hour, of the 11th day of November. This information was issued to ALL ranks.

Fighting continued up until the 11th hour of November 11th, but most instructions were issued not to try to take objectives that would require heavy losses.

I've certainly heard stories of rejoicing, and I mean, why not, the war was over?! However, from what I've read of the British Army, the end was greeted with silence, and quietness on the part of the men. It was finally over; the Germans were finally defeated, all the troubles appeared to be behind them, and most faced an uncertain future.
