Organised crime still exists but media has portrayed it as a bigger problem then what we suspect it was. For example the Five Families which were the five original mafia families in New York still exist in some capacity but they have severely been diminished in power with all of the bosses imprisoned for criminal acts. The Mafias power drastically began to decrease after the FBI started to successfully embed agents into Mafia operations as undercover agents. This basically started to rip holes in the organisation as agents started to get higher and higher in the criminal organisations.
I'm not an expert or a historian but I love this subreddit.
That said, I work in the solid waste disposal business which of course historically bore an overwhelming connection to la cosa nostra. After a staggering series of arrests by way of NYPD undercover work (see book, "Takedown") in the 80's, they were dismantled. Now, they are out of jail and actively re-engaging...granted there is much more oversight but they are very much back in the NE.
