Well it is unknown exactly how many were lost. There were around 160,000 soldiers who had some degree of Jewish background. Now so as to not overstate things many of them had parents who converted many years earlier. None or very few of these people were Jews by Jewish law and were only considered part Jews by the Nazi regime.

As for a good example Werner Goldberg is a good one to look into. He was a german soldier whose image was used as the ideal german soldier his father was the only survivor in his family. So Werner lost many cousins uncles, aunts in the Holocaust.

A book to read on the subject is Hitlers Jewish Soldiers or if you do not feel like reading there was a decent documentary a few years ago by the same name.
