Did Salvador Allende's government in Chile fall in part because of an economic war?

by asdrubalivan

I live in Venezuela, and there are some allegations here of a possible economic war (Though I'm not trying to discuss this here), my question is about Chile back in 1973, Was there such thing as an economic war against Salvador Allende? What's the evidence about this?

Yes absolutely. I wrote a paper on this a few years back that explores the economic blockade of Allende's Chile. Unfortunately I'm currently in London and my paper is in Melbourne but I am heading home tomorrow so I will respond with a more in depth answer as soon as I can.

Allende's version of state planning was disastrous from the start and included a massive computer system in which statistical data and production figures were entered. What Allende and the idealists around him didn't realize was that when factories are nationalized they become political operations, thus their owners are incentivized to misrepresent market data, either to get more resources and political favors by saying they're exceeding the production quotas, or purposely make it seem like they're failing so they lobby and get more favors which they can trade off to other members in the production chain to raise their political clout. In capitalist systems because the end goal is money, specifically the owners money if he lies he lies to himself. This always happens in top down socialist systems, from the USSR, North Korea, to your Venezuela. Allende's system was creating political chaos, what then happened was there was an ambitious element of the military were very aware that the US would help them overthrow the government, the rest is history. There is no "economic war", rather a more traditional power grab when government is losing legitimacy and a faction knowing they have the support of a stronger imperial power takes over. Socialism isn't as efficient in allocating and creating resources weakens state which leaves leaves them more vulnerable to outside intervention, this is the very reason China adopted Market reforms.
