During WW2, did most German soldiers fight for Hitler or their country? What other motivations inspired them to risk their lives?

They were trained soldiers. They were not offered a choice. Like professional soldiers everywhere they had to fight. Keep in mind that Europe almost always some war or other going on for centuries. These soldiers were raised by fathers, grandfather, and uncles who also fought in various wars. It was considered honorable to be a soldier. You fought for your country, your leader, your commanding officer, and your fellow soldiers. It was a package deal.
