I am sorry if the question is not clear enough. Basically I would like to write a work about roman personality, in which I would compare how did the views of historians of his time on him vary and in the end I would touch on how did the opinion change through time.
My current shortlist is Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Pompeius, Crassus, Marcus Traianus and Gaius Marius (some of these are probably not controversial but still would be interesting to write about). Would you please help me with adding someone or choosing the right one?
Most of these guys don't have historians writing in their time. Surviving historiography only exists since Sallust, who was probably writing in the 30s BCE. Diodorus Siculus for this period is fragmentary. Appian is a 1st century CE author. Livy's books on his period are lost (but some survive in epitome), and Dio's 3rd century CE.
It might make more sense to write about how a reception of a character changed over time?
Or you might be able to mine Cicero's letters (not an historian) for different perspectives of someone among the people Cicero corresponded with?
