Are there any good theories on why circumcision started as a practice?

Are there any records on the practice stating a reason other than Jewish, Muslim or Puritan influence?

To my knowledge, this is the earliest record of what APPEARS to be male circumcision:

It is a relief from the tomb of the high official Ankhmahor at Saqqara in Egypt, dating to the sixth dynasty (ca. 2400 BC).

Apart from that, there is very little evidence that circumcision was common in Egypt before the Islamic period, so this particular image may in fact refer to some other type of medical procedure. There is too little evidence to say either way :-(
