Throughout the cold war, the GDR was infamous for erecting the Berlin wall and performing exhausting measures to prevent German citizens from fleeing to the BRD. Were pro-communist German civilians and police employed to guard the wall, or was it almost strictly soviet soldiers and military police?
The Inner German Border was patrolled and secured by the border troops of the East German Army. From the point of view of East Germany, the Inner German Border was simply a border like any other, and as such secured by state troops. However, due to the sensitive nature of the border and the goal by East Germany to lock it down as much as possible, the border troops were not part of the police, but rather the army.
