It may sound like a ridiculous question, but I've heard the term used (although I can't remember where I heard it). It makes sense to me that at least a few of them would exist because games are approaching almost 40 years old and the technology that lead up to them is far older. There are also computer historians who cover subjects which are only a few decades old, so it makes sense to me.
Not a video game historian, but Keith Burgun is trying to establish video game theory as a field. He's a reddit user (his username escapes me) and he runs a subreddit on the topic and has published an ongoing blog as well as a textbook...if you google him, all this should come up.
He's a fairly controversial figure in game design, but he's a trailblazer trying to define a lot of stuff so it's natural that he'd run into a lot of opposition while the field solidifies.
Angela Schwarz is a professor for Modern History in Siegen, Germany, who offers lectures on the history of computer games.
