All the barbarian peoples and groups who migrated to the West at fall of the Romans, vandals, visigoths, franks, lombards, burgundians as examples, do we know where they first originated or came from?
If we do, how accurately and do we know why all these tribes seemed to migrate in a similar time period?
no. I'm blanking on the exact name but German scholars during the 1800s did great work collecting and standardizing ancient texts under the belief they could find essentially the proto Germans, dutch, down through history. Looking at the ancient sources they tried to piece together the "real" starting location of all these tribes but the current consensus is it's a fools errand. our sources don't really know enough the real ancient origins/homelands and contradict each other (as well as the fact these tribes often really cohere later). So while the germanic philological project sort of failed it produced a lot of good work with ancient sources that we still use today
