If a vagrant or criminal died in the country, would the body be left for animals? Were peasants ever paid to dispose of wayside corpses?

Because crime was very common, were medieval roads littered with human bones?

I could see someone inquiring on such a matter during the time of Cervantes and Don Quixote, or other culturally well-known pre-modern periods in the history of Spain, but how have you come to inquire on this specific time and place, if I may ask?
