What gift of a food might an iron-age traveler bring?

by Werrf

So I have a character seeking shelter for a storm in a cornish-esque courtyard house near the beginning of winter. I would like to have him bring a gift of food for their hearth, preferably something that the subsistance farming community would recognise as being of enormous value, but I'm not sure what it should be. I'd like something that could feed the family right through the winter with the right preservation (like storage in a fogou). Any suggestions?

Fresh meat (deer/elk/aurochs), hunted while on the road. Could do bear if you wanted less edible/more impressive.

Salt is always a major gift/trade good.
