I understand that the Chinese saw all adjacent kingdoms as tributaries but what made them choose to bring Yunnan, Tibet and NW China under Imperial control and leave SE Asia, Korea, and Japan as "Vassal" states.
Parts of Korea have been under Chinese rule at various times in history. In regards to Japan and Southeast Asia, geography and terrain prevented any sort of conquest.
