I remember seeing a few posts on reddit about how SFR Yugoslavia was probably the best communist nation in the world, since Tito's form of socialism actually let workers decide what they wanted to do and did not centralize to the extent that Belgrade had the same fiscal control as Moscow did. Was Yugoslavia actually that much better or was it comparable to the rest of the Eastern Bloc?
[also as a side question, how many political prisoners did they keep? was that comparable to Soviet prisoners?]
In his autobiography, Khrushchev Remembers there's a section in which he goes and visits Tito. After touring the SFRY and meeting the workers--who have freedom of travel and much higher workplace autonomy--he thinks to himself something like "shit, wish we could pull this back home." I'm not in a position to do exact quotations but will return to the subject in a few hours.
