If mankind originated from Africa, why was most of the continent terra incognita before the age of discovery?

It was hardly terra incognita to the many people who lived there. As for those who didn't, the time between migrations out of Africa and recorded history is far too great for any memory to have lasted. Of course, let's not forget the considerable portions of northern Africa that were frequently involved in interregional affairs centuries before the 1500s.
