How come none of his surviving officers achieved the fame of completing the circumnavigation instead of him?
Given the fact that Magellan died in the Philippines and his initial plan was to find out a west route to the East Indies and not complete circumnavigation.
Magellan is not known for being the first person to circumnavigate the globe, but he is known for arranging and leading the first expedition which eventually did circumnavigate the globe. The person who led the final survivors into port was Juan Sebastian Elcano. Earlier in the voyage Elcano orchestrated a mutiny against Magellan, and spend six months of the voyage in chains. Due to his naval experience he was eventually pardoned, and given the command of The Santiago, one of Magellan's five ships. After Magellan's death, a series of men led the expedition as it continued to languish in the east indies. In the end, Elcano took command of the last seaworthy ship: the Victoria, and with only 17 of the original survivors reached Spain on September 6, 1522. Elcano was acknowledged by King Charles I (V) of Spain for the accomplishment, and was invested with a coat of arms with the motto: "You went around me first", accompanied by a substantial annual pension.
