When Allied troops began liberating concentration camps during the final days of the war, many of them were shocked by what they encountered. Today, the popular narrative regarding U.S. involvement in World War II alleges in part that we fought to stop Hitler's murderous campaign against the Jews. How can we reconcile this discrepancy? What is the earliest plausible point at which one could say the Allies had good intelligence about the Holocaust and what was their response?
In August of 1942 the US knew about the Camps, by November of 1942 they had confirmed the initial reports and released a joint declaration with other Allied nations condemning the German actions. It was impossible to do much more at that time, the war was in full swing and the Allies were still taking a terrible beating on all fronts.
