Who was Hermes Trismegistus?

by Kng_Wasabi

The Wikipedia page compares him to Greek and Egyptian gods, but doesn't link him to any actual people. All it says of the Hermetica and its purported author is that it was likely written some time in the 2nd or 3rd century BC and that "they were certainly not written in remotest antiquity by an all wise Egyptian priest, as the Renaissance believed, but by various unknown authors, all probably Greeks, and they contain popular Greek philosophy of the period." Is there any level of consensus among historians as to wrote the Hermetica, or even when it was written?

The texts now known under the name of the Corpus Hermeticum are considered gnostic texts of unknown authorship. Throughout the middle ages they were believed to be authored by Hermes Trismegistus, much earlier than they actually where. Hermes Trismigestus is in fact a made up sage conflating elements of the Egyption god Toth and the Greek god Hermes, who himself was believed to be human not a god.
