So, I apologize for a badly formatted question. I observed someone use the term "surrender monkey" on Facebook to describe the French and was curious about the origins of the attitudes behind that slur -- especially given the role the French played in the American Revolution.
Is the attitude and animosity solely do recent military history, such as WWII or is it an attitude that is more deeply rooted? Or perhaps completely borrowed from the English?
FAQs section is full of previous answers. Suffice to say WWII was what did it. The fact that Free French forces fought on, and that the united states was conspicuously absent from the war in 1940, tend to get pushed under the rug.
