Most senior officers (ie Generals) would probably have a sword for ceremonial purposes, and of course cavalrymen would have been issued sabres for shock action.

French and German infantry officers, and sergeant majors, carried swords in the early weeks of the war, but abandoned them fairly quickly, as being dangerous encumbrances. Cavalry officers carried sabres throughout.
