Also, I don't think efficacious is the right word, or your answer would be tautological - ie. it became more efficacious because people wanted to fight in melee rather than with bows.

If you're discussing efficiency then the answer is that it did not. Combined arms were/are essential in conducting warfare something which would be emphatically demonstrated should one side forget it.
