The 1968 Nixon cover is an allusion to the popular belief that Nixon lost the 1960 presidential election because of his appearance in his first televised debate with Kennedy. There's a famous poll that indicates those who listened to the debate on the radio thought Nixon had won. Those who saw it on television thought Kennedy had won.
