Listening to podcasts about Roman history, it's often mentioned that we don't know where X battle took place. If we located it, would we be likely to find weapons and armor under the surface?

What about campaigns when they were constantly on the move. Like Ceasar conquering gaul. It doesn't seem very practical to carry around lots of loot, and were there really a lot of people nearby in the dense forests?
