The Aethelbert Laws #10 and 11 say "Gif man wið cyninges mægdenman geligeþ, L. scillinga gebete." and "Gif hio grindende þeowa sio, XXV. scillinga gebete. Sio þridde XII. scillingas." This translates to "If a man lies with a maiden belonging to the king, he shall pay 50 shillings compensation." and "If she is a grinding slave, he shall pay 25 shillings compensation. [If she is of the] third [class], [he shall pay] 12 shillings compensation." This reference to classes of slaves appears in many of laws by various Anglo-Saxon Kings. Does anyone know what the classes of slaves were? racially, if the top slaves are ex-freemen, or more skilled, etc.
Just saw this. I don't have the text with me, but if you're still interested, the standard reference is David A.E. Pelteret, Slavery in Early Mediaeval England: From the Reign of Alfred until the Twelfth Century, Studies in Anglo-Saxon History (Woodbridge: The Boydell Press, 1995).
I can't recall Pelteret discussing this law in particular, nor do I recall any other particular references to grades of slaves. I can tell you, however, that they were not related to race (since they didn't categorize people by race in the modern sense). Instead, this law ranks female slaves according to what they can do: If they're pretty enough to be with the king, they're worth a lot. If they aren't so pretty but can do hard work, they're worth half. And if they can't even do hard work, they're still worth a quarter.
