College students, researchers, and historians all usually have some sort of paid for database, is there a database for a layman?
What are you looking for? Primary or secondary source material? I have used Google Books and Google Scholar for secondary sources when I can't find what I want on JSTOR. For primary sources, Library of Congress and National Archives. I have found some university with digitized archives. You just need to search.
