An slightly broader historical scope is also fine (say, the 20th century).
I read the subreddit rules but they didn't specify about questions like this. I hope they are allowed.
A History of the Soviet Union from the Beginning to the End is what my professor for Russia in the 20th Century assigned: http://www.amazon.com/History-Soviet-Union-Beginning-End/dp/0521682967
For something that gives an excellent overview of the rise and fall of communism (and by extension the Soviet Union) with a wide ranging remit, that looks at communist regimes that were both established by and hostile to the USSR. I'd suggest having a look at the Rise and Fall of Communism. Its very readable, and excellent.
