How did the flag come to be so universally adopted by the countries of the world as an official national symbol?

There is not a country in the world which does not have it's own flag, and outside of the flag of Nepal they are all some version of a quadrilateral - the vast majority being simple rectangles. This level of uniformity both in adoption and in style is just stunning to me. How did this come to be?
