While I cannot say for certain I believe that being a flamethrower operator was the most dangerous or at least one of the most dangerous jobs. Because of the lethality of the weapons flamethrower operators were targeted first especially in the Pacific where they would blast fire into the entrances to Japanese bunkers. A hit to the fuel tank on a soldier's back would almost definitely send them up in flames. The job was so dangerous it was said that the life of someone wielding one could be counted in seconds. However the weapons did have their benefits in killing the deeply entrenched Japanese in their bunkers that would be otherwise costly to attack so they were targeted for a good reason on the part of the Japanese.
