Salt Lake City is the 124th largest city and the 48th largest metro area. I'm just saying, seems like a pretty small place to move a major team like the Utah Jazz.
Salt Lake City had a popular ABA team (the Stars) that were relocated there from LA and set attendance records, but inexplicably folded for financial reasons. (See http://www.remembertheaba.com/utah-stars.html)
The Jazz had venue problems in New Orleans, and eventually played at the Superdome, but Mardi Gras and football playoffs gave them schedule issues. (See http://blog.nola.com/tpsports/2009/06/three_decades_ago_the_new_orle.html)
New Orleans had an 11% amusement tax on tickets, which was the highest in the league. (See above)
There were talks about the Oakland As or the Pittsburgh Pirates moving baseball to the Superdome, which would have caused even more scheduling issues. (See this for a mention of the As: https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=mBQOAAAAIBAJ&sjid=QnwDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6523,5452839&dq=superdome+yankees&hl=en)
