There was apparently a flourishing black market within the camps. I'm not sure what "prison bitches" means in this context but the Germans used trusties ("Kapos") recruited from the prisoner population to supervise work and even enforce discipline on the other prisoners, particularly toward the end of the war when they had a massive manpower shortage.
