How 'pubby' was the pub? Winston Churchill was an eminently 'clubbable' gentleman, and of course many of these would have their own bars, but once you were outside the cities, a larger public house would have a range of options for different social brackets from the saloon, for the more common, through the lounge as an intermediate area, to 'snugs' and private rooms for the richest.
