They participated in the Greek war of independence and helped the founding of the Greek state in 1830. Various iconic heroes of the time of the independence were Arvanites. Before that, they coexisted with the Greeks in the Ottoman empire. They were assimilated but a lot of them still retain their distinct linguistic characteristics, even today. Their language, but most importantly their customs are steadily fading from the modern Greek culture.
