Hello /r/askhistorians
As the title says ive got an idea for a game im about to start making and im in the research phase so to speak at the moment.
Im trying to find examples of houses/buildings from the 1700s the 1800s and 1900s to inspire me to start modeling game assets but im coming up short.
Does anyone know of any good websites of examples of architecture from these eras?
Is there a particular regional style you're looking for?
Keep in mind that any setting in those time periods would also include housing preserved from earlier periods as well.
I kiiiinda want to suggest going to a library or bookstore, if you have one available. Especially if you have any places handy that specialize in Big Heavy Art Books - for instance the last time I was in Los Angeles, I visited Hennessy and Ingalls and walked out with a huge-ass book full of photographs of beautiful staircases.
Because "buildings from the 1800s" totally sounds like the kind of thing you could find a big heavy art book about. Or "historic buildings of London" or whatever, I was just visiting my mother's place and she has a bunch of books on New Orleans, including ones on its architecture, some of which even helpfully divide stuff up by times.
Of course, this is assuming you live in a city big enough to have decent bookstores/libraries, and a budget of $50-70 to spend on a book.
(As a fellow artist I also kind of want to suggest picking a more particular place than "general European', there's gonna be a lot of difference between, say, German architecture and Spanish architecture due to climate.)
Check out this book. It has some floor plans etc and shows their development. It may also lead on to other sources.
Are you trying to model a city, village, other settlement or independent buildings?
