Which civilisation first began the need to have their people bow, bend the knee, and/or prostrate to those in power? How well was it first received? When it spread to other civilisations, how did those people feel about lowering themselves to those who believe they are higher than others?

You can read about it in history books, see it on TV, or hear about it some other way. I'm wondering if there are any documents about which civilisation started it all, and if there is something on who the first person was that people lowered themselves too.
