I've heard that Romania was called Rumania up until the latter half of the 20th century and was changed as a way of stressing that they descended from the Romans. What was this process like? Where and how did it start specifically?

Was this something that happened at a social level or a political level? I'm really curious as to what the mechanisms that needed to be put in place for this change to occur. Any insight would be really appreciated.
