In modern English use, the term "Viking" or "Vikings" is commonly used to refer not only to people who went viking -- that is, the seaborne raiders of legend -- but also to their relatives at home and their culture as a whole.

Personally, I dislike this usage and tend to refer to the raiders as Vikings and their origin peoples and communities (and ship building tradition) as Norse, but I'm also one of the few people I know who still draws a distinction between who and whom, lay and lie, etc. (I tend to prefer to use the more precise terms because people have all sorts of incorrect cultural assumptions about "Vikings.")
