Having read this, I think it's trying to put too many modern ideas back into the Revolution. The very concept of austerity is too anachronistic, and doesn't really fit the situation. Parliament's decision to garrison troops and run customs patrols cost money, whereas most austerity measures are budget cuts.

The author also points to the opposition to slavery during the period, which was certainly NOT widespread across American Revolutionaries.

I do like the points that he made about the Revolutionaries having a VERY different understand of government than the modern American conservatives that claim to be their inheritors.
